miR-219-1-3p Is a Negative Regulator of the Mucin MUC4 Expression and Is a Tumor Suppressor in Pancreatic Cancer
Scientists showed that miR-219-1-3p negatively regulates MUC4 mucin expression via its direct binding to MUC4 3′-UTR. MiR-219-1-3p overexpression in pancreatic cancer cell lines induced a decrease of cell proliferation associated with a decrease of cyclin D1 and a decrease of Akt and Erk pathway activation. [Oncogene] Abstract

Uncoupling Protein-2 Mediates the Protective Action of Berberine against Oxidative Stress in Rat Insulinoma INS-1E Cells and in Diabetic Mouse Islets
Scientists investigated the effects of berberine, a botanical alkaloid purified from Coptidis rhizoma, on oxidative stress and insulin secretion through restoration of the uncoupling protein-2 expression in high glucose-treated INS-1E cells and rat islets or in db/db mouse islets. [Br J Pharmacol] Abstract

Anti-TCR Therapy Combined with Fingolimod for Reversal of Diabetic Hyperglycemia by ß Cell Regeneration in the LEW.1AR1-iddm Rat Model of Type 1 Diabetes
The therapeutic capacity of an antibody directed against the T cell receptor (anti-TCR) of the TCR/CD3 complex alone or in combination with fingolimod to reverse the diabetic metabolic state through suppression of autoimmunity and stimulation of ß cell regeneration was analyzed in the LEW.1AR1-iddm rat, an animal model of human type 1 diabetes. [J Mol Med] Abstract

Progesterone Induces Apoptosis of Insulin-Secreting Cells: Insights into the Molecular Mechanism
Investigators showed that progesterone can be toxic to pancreatic ß-cells through an oxidative stress-dependent mechanism inducing apoptosis. [J Endocrinol] Abstract | Full Article

Macrophage Contact Dependent and Independent TLR4 Mechanisms Induce ß-Cell Dysfunction and Apoptosis in a Mouse Model of Type 2 Diabetes
Researchers evaluated the expression and the function of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on pancreatic ß-cells in primary mouse islets and on the murine ß-cell line MIN6 in the presence or absence of macrophages. [PLoS One] Full Article

PANCREATIC CANCER

Pancreatic Satellite Cells Derived Galectin-1 Increase the Progression and Less Survival of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma
The roles of pancreatic satellite cells isolated from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and normal pancreas on the proliferative activity, MMP2 and MMP9 expression, and the invasion of CFPAC-1 in the co-cultured system, as well as on the tumor establishment and development in mouse xenografts by mixed implanting with CFPAC-1 subcutaneously were evaluated. [PLoS One] Full Article

Resveratrol Plays Dual Roles in Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Resveratrol treatment inhibited tumor growth, induced apoptosis, and up-regulated Bax expression in a pancreatic cell line (capan-2 cells). [J Cancer Res Clin Oncol] Abstract

Pristimerin, a Quinonemethide Triterpenoid, Induces Apoptosis in Pancreatic Cancer Cells through the Inhibition of Pro-Survival Akt/NF-?B/mTOR Signaling Proteins and Anti-Apoptotic Bcl-2
Scientists evaluated the anticancer activity and the mechanism of action of pristimerin, a quinonemethide triterpenoid, against MiaPaCa-2 and Panc-1 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell lines. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

Effect of NK4 Transduction in Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Biological Characteristics of Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Mesenchymal stem cells expressing NK4 strongly inhibited proliferation and migration of the pancreatic cancer cell line SW1990 after co-culture. [Int J Mol Sci] Abstract | Download Full Article

REVIEWS
Microenvironmental Stimuli for Proliferation of Functional Islet Beta-Cells
The authors discuss the requirements of microenvironmental stimuli that stimulate ß-cell proliferation in cell cultures. They highlight advanced approaches for augmentation of ß-cell expansion that have recently emerged in this field. [Cell Biosci] Abstract | Full Article

In Vitro Reconstitution of Pancreatic Islets
The lack of transplantable pancreatic islets is a serious problem that affects the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. This review discusses recent advances in the reconstitution of islets. [Organogenesis] Abstract
